i've played around with my soapstone baking stone quite a bit and i think you could cook just about anything on it. i do all the yeast things on the stone and for reheating foods like say...spinach pie, chicken, well, anything that will hold it's own shape, i just throw it on the stone and don't even bother to turn the oven on, just come back in an hour or so and it is perfect. soapstone cookery is popular in other parts of the world especially south america and the mid east. there are a wide variety of sizes and shapes for all the vessels you could imagine. and one more word about amonia....it may be the most amzing cleaner out there along with vinegar and bleach. i look at it this way: you've got vintage stoves, fridges, and houses....if you've maintained the original materials, wood, stone, metal, glass....what do you need modern cleansers for ? you're not cleaning modern materials, quite the opposite.

I have found a new product that works great in cleaning the griddle - Dawn Power Dissolver. It works fantastic, and no ammonia smell. Just spray, and let the griddle sit a few minutes. I still have to scrub, but not very hard. Look for it in the grocery near the dish detergents.

I too recently purchased a cast iron griddle. It measures 19"x 8.5". It works nicely on my tiny Hotpoint gas range that I am cooking on at the moment. I am going to take it camping and see how it does. I also have Le Creuset, and basic cast iron pots and pans. My latest discovery however is cooking on stainless steel lined copper pans. Low to medium heat only, saute beautifully and very even heat distribution. Bought them on ebay
